Summary: Primarily papers and photographs relating to Ralph G. Vaughan and his aviation career, the collection contains materials from three generations of related families from 1854 to 1994. There are correspondence, manuscripts and photographs from the Vaughan, Garoutte, Struble, Gildart, and Lewis families in Moctezuma, Mexico, California, and Merkel, Texas. Photographs include cabinet cards, tintypes, and cartes-de-visite of family members. A few images of the family at Merkel, Texas show a railroad depot and the first gin mill. The bulk of the collection is flight log books, military orders, memos, circulars, photographs and training materials relating to Vaughan's personal and military aviation careers. There are printed materials relating to the development of the B-29 bomber and yearbooks and photographs of the 1925 and 1926 Reserve Aviation officers classes showing the camps and men. There are photographs of activities and passengers of Apache Airlines (Globe, Ariz.) and California Air Service as well as advertising flyers for the flights. Barnstorming images show passengers waiting for their chance to go up in the plane, including Navajo children in Monument Valley. A series of images show Monument Valley in the 1930s. Also present are aerial views of Globe, Ariz. There are also images of three airplane accidents. There are images of the dedication of the Midland Airport in Globe, Ariz. with Governor Phillips and Chief Talkalai of the Coyotero Apaches. Photographs of Boeing Company officials, production scenes, and factory workers assembling aircraft are also present. There are also a few images of a family trip to Yellowstone.

Biographical note: Ralph G. Vaughan was a pilot and aviation instructor during World War I. He joined the Army Air Corps Reserve in 1919. He operated an automobile garage in California, married Ruth Lewis, purchased an airplane and established a flying school and aviation business. He taught Reserve Aviation Officers in Ontario, California in 1925 and 1926. In 1929, they moved to Globe, Ariz. and started the Apache Airlines commuter service providing connections to Phoenix, Ariz. The airline clo...
